Wow...
I've been gone for... well, a long time. Life happens and this had to take a back seat.
The reason I logged in was that I saw this in my iGoogle today and it made me think of this place since Al basically summed up my design philosophy.
Then I opened this place up for the first time in months and it is a MESS!
Header's gone... design is all wonky... general disarray.
Apparently blogger.com has been playing around and I need to get this place into shape.
All my logos and stuff are on my other PC, so that'll have to wait til tonight.

Ugghhh....
When it rains, it pours.
Not going to go into the gritty details right now. I'll post pics later.
Suffice to say I hope to get this back on track shortly.
Thanks for your patience.

Demanding much?
This isn't the post that I was intending to make today, but I have to now.
Then I got down to the bottom and found this...
I was just trying to cancel my membership with Audible.com and was going through the process. They did the standard begging me to stay routine, which is fine.
Then I got down to the bottom and found this...
The "Select a Reason" field is REQUIRED. This is rather presumptuous of them, don't you think? If I want to give you a reason, fine. But don't DEMAND that I give you one. It's like breaking up with your significant other- sometimes it's just over. Don't make me lie to you as to why.

Another week...
Well, another week has passed with no updates.
For once, it's not for lack of topics or time but instead is simply lack of motivation.
Work has been.... interesting, so when I get home I have no interest in thinking more about UX.
When I get home today I'll do one of the posts I've got in the queue.

New Glasses- The Follow-Up
As promised in my post http://redpaintui.blogspot.com/2012/03/just-ordered-new-glasses.html. this is the follow-up.
I received my new glasses via Fed Ex yesterday, well within the stated time frame. The frames are nice and don't feel "cheap" and the lenses seem to be correct per my prescription. They came packaged in a hard shell glasses case and included a very clever little screwdriver which I may end up doing a post about soon if I get stuck for a topic.
All in all, a satisfactory experience.
Now if they could just add a few more images to their "Try On View" they'd be all set.
Optically yours,
- Jay

I'm not rich yet.
Somehow, the fates overlooked me and I didn't hit the lottery on Friday night. I'm not sure where my cunning plan failed, but here we are.
I'm still trying to get over the shock of going from stupidly rich to not in a matter of a seconds, so our regularly scheduled programming will be resumed tomorrow.
Thank you for your support in my time of grief.

New banner
Decided to put my own design philosophy into practice tonight.
I was looking at my old banner and thinking "Wow... that looks BUSY."
So, I spent an hour or so fiddling with different ideas when I finally had that "Well DUH" moment that I've mentioned before and came up with the new one.
What do you all think?

Just ordered new glasses.
I got my prescription from the optometrist and decided to give http://www.coastal.com a shot since I had a super-secret coupon code that got me what amounts to 90% off your first pair.
By the way... the code is "HIP2SAVEFREE"... but don't tell them that I told you. It's a secret.
So I'm going through and I pick out a pair that will make me look like George Clooney on a good day... aww hell, who am I kidding... I'm hoping for Bruce Willis on a bad day. Anyway, I pick out a pair and I see that they have this "Try On View" function:
Now, as you can see you can select the face that they appear on. Fortunately for me, I'm an older white male, so I found the distinguished looking gent pictured. However, my first thought was "Well, thank God only white people have crappy eyesight.". You can choose the gamut between a young blonde cheerleader type, a slightly darker young lady, a young Studdly McStud college guy and... me. If you are Black, Hispanic, Asian or any other shade but Volvo-driving white guy, too bad.
To be fair, they do offer an "Upload Image" function where you can stick in your own photo which is kind of cool... but come on... couldn't they offer at least some diversity in the stock images?
I'll let you know how the glasses are when I get them.
LESSON LEARNED: A little diversity goes a long way.

Random Thought
Setting in a meeting and looking at the presenter's screen. Why is IE so insanely busy when Chrome and Firefox are so clean?

Czech done right
Wow... nothing for 3 weeks and now two posts in 10 minutes, including a REAL post and not some lame filler.
(princessbride) Inconceivable! (/princessbride)
Anyway...
I've seen a LOT of websites from Eastern Europe lately and they all have two things in common:

Anyway...
I've seen a LOT of websites from Eastern Europe lately and they all have two things in common:
- They all sport a 1990's look and feel, if not a Geocities look and feel. Somebody using a copy of Front Page 2002 could do better in 20 minutes over a latte.
- They all have absolutely HORRID English translation. Punctuation looks like it was loaded into a shotgun and blasted at the screen, fascinating verb tenses, puzzling capitalization, you know the deal.
Today, I was sent this site via tweet:
It's a Czech site but it looks like it could have been done in NYC. The phone flipping around look very smooth and the design is nice and clean. The Czech-to-English translation isn't flawless, it feels rather formal and stiff in spots, but I had no problems understanding what they were trying to say.
One reason may be that the agency that created this site: http://incube.cz/ has an office in the UK, where I assume the translation was done.
All in all, EXCELLENT job by the Czechs and Incube.

A letter to my blog.
Dear Blog,
Three weeks and nothing in here. Now you know why I can't have a house plant or a dog.
At least a cat will eventually say "Screw you, fella" and make a break for it to steal from the neighbor's garbage. Either that or they do what one cat that I had used to do and walk up to me and hiss when his food or water bowl was empty. Too bad you can't do that.
If you where a plant you'd be black and wilted from lack of attention by now.
I'm sorry, little blog... I'll try to do better by you from now on.
Love,
Jay

Poor design or an attempt at fraud? You decide...
So, I went to Fry's today to pick up a tax software for this year. I needed one that did both Federal and State.
I picked up the H&R Block Deluxe package and flipped it over to check out the features:
Ahhh... apparently I can get the State version with the Basic edition. Since I don't need any of the other features offered in the Deluxe edition, I picked up a copy of Basic and flipped it over...
Ummmm....????
So... Basic says the State module is only available in the PREMIUM version?
... Confused.... Bought Turbo Tax even thought it was more expensive.

Yeah yeah... I know.
Consider this another lame apology for lack of updates.
Apparently my job now includes "must know how to program in SQL" in its description.
As I have no clue how to do this I've been spending my time immersed in this odd world where things can be either "Left Joined" or "Right Joined" but never simply "Joined" or "Merged" or "Combined"....
...
Pray for me...

Press... and hold?
Today's post is about how a small addition to a common object can make things much clearer.
This is the remote key fob for my Hyundai:
Top button locks the doors, middle button unlocks the doors, bottom button opens the trunk. Fairly obvious.
What isn't so obvious is that you can just press the top two buttons but you need to press and HOLD the trunk button for 2-3 seconds before it opens.
I've tossed my keys to at least three people to get something out of the trunk and its always the same thing:
LESSON LEARNED: The barest of instructions are sometimes required, even if it's a single word.

- Press the button again.
- Tug on the trunk lid again.
- Look either mad or confused.
- Turn to me in confusion.
- "Press and hold it."
- They do, trunk opens.
- "That's annoying."
What would fix this? A simple addition to the trunk button. Add the word "HOLD" over the picture of the car.

Mea Culpa Maxima
In other words, I'm sorry.
The bad news is that I promised a new post more than two weeks ago and have utterly failed to deliver.
The good news is that the reason I have neglected to do so is that I have been buried in an avalanche of research which has required me to plow through some of the most horrific examples of UI and screen design imaginable.
Trust me... if you want to see truly awful design, turn to the old-school heavy industries.
Now that I've finally been able to come up for air I should be able to pay more attention to this blog.
On a side note, I was honored to learn that Paul Sherman is now following me on Twitter. I've long been a fan of his site www.usabilityblog.com and looked to it as an inspiration for starting my own little slice of the web here. So- WELCOME.
More substantial post coming tomorrow- I promise.

WTB Visio reader for Android
There will be a full post a little later today.
Right now, I just wanted to take a moment to whine about the fact that there is NO Visio reader for Android.
I don't expect to be able to do any editing of a Visio doc on my tablet... but at least let me look at them.
If anybody sees a Visio reader for Android, please let me know.
Thanks.

New Gadget
Just a quick post today.
I've added a list of my favorite usability resources over there on the right side of the screen.
Take a moment to check them out when you have the time. You won't be disappointed.

Finally, the long-awaited "door post" arrives.
First, apologies for not updating this space before now. Having a pinched nerve in your arm and keyboarding are not things that go together very well.
To make up for my absence, I decided to finally do the "door post" I've been promising since Day 1.
To make up for my absence, I decided to finally do the "door post" I've been promising since Day 1.
This is the entrance to the location near my home of a nationwide chain of toy stores. I've been going to this store for literally years and something has always bothered me about the entrance. In fact, it was this entrance that sparked the idea to create this blog in the first place.
Notice that the entire facade of the store is a bright yellow, practically visible from space. Very friendly and inviting. At the very bottom corner of this mass of yellow there is one red spot.
That "red spot" is actually the ENTRANCE to the store:
The exit is the one highlighted by that massive yellow field....
WHY did they make the entrance to their store the ONLY red on the entire building?
Red is recognized around the globe as meaning "danger", "stay out", "warning". If I'm in a foreign country and don't speak the language but see a red sign, I know that I should not go past it. Despite this, the owners of this business made the entrance to their business this "DO NOT CROSS" color.
This fact was made very clear to me when I visited the store recently and saw a little old lady standing in front of the store. Clearly, English was not her primarily language. In fact, I doubt if she even spoke it. This little grandma was standing at the YELLOW doors, trying to pry them open. The fact that RED = STAY OUT was so engrained in her that she refused to think that the other set of doors could possibly be the entrance to this store for children. I had to physically take her by the arm and lead her to the red doors.
The entire architectural design of the front of this building is designed to draw your attention to the EXIT. They could very easily change the signs around, move around a few displays and the design would be perfect- a huge yellow expanse calling out to customers and one spot of red warning them of where NOT to go.
LESSON LEARNED: Colors matter. They are not just for "artistic beauty". Ignore them at your peril.

Energy Fiend... Annoying Nav
This post is going to be more of a quick hit, since there isn't a lot to say about the site in general.
I was having a conversation with my office mate about caffeine content in drinks and she decided to go looking for a source. She found: www.energyfiend.com/the-caffeine-database
I was having a conversation with my office mate about caffeine content in drinks and she decided to go looking for a source. She found: www.energyfiend.com/the-caffeine-database
The site has the exact information we were looking for and the information was sortable by name, caffeine level, size, type... all very useful. The blue hyperlinks take you to another screen with an image of the product and ordering information, if available.
HOWEVER... we quickly realized that if you performed a sort, clicked on a hyperlink and then hit the "back" button to return to the main page your sort was dropped, returning you to the default alphabetical listing by product. The expected behavior would have been to retain the sort rather than forcing us to resort and scroll back down to the "M"s to find the caffeine content of Mountain Dew vs Mt Dew Code Red.
As soon as we noticed this behavior my office mate looked at me and said "Something for your blog"... and here it is.
LESSON LEARNED: If a user performs a sort or a search they will expect that to persist during their stay on your site. Don't make them do the same thing over and over again or they will get fed up and leave.

A look at MSNBC.com
First off, my apologies for again not getting to the "door post". I promise that one is in the works and I will get the required photos taken this weekend.
In the meantime, let's take a look at a very popular news site and discuss what works and what could be improved.
In the meantime, let's take a look at a very popular news site and discuss what works and what could be improved.
As you can tell, the site is MSNBC.com. This site has long been my go-to source for news and it's usually my homepage. The reporting may tend to be a bit biased at times, but you will have that with every news source since it's all written by humans with emotions.
I've kept coming to this site because it it well done from a usability perspective. For example:
- Excellent use of white space, so the user doesn't feel overwhelmed.
- Images are well-proportioned to the page and adds to the content rather than distract from it.
- Sub-navigational elements are well designed and implemented.
Once the user scrolls down a bit, the page is broken into specific sections for Sports, Entertainment and other popular topics.
Note that each sub-section includes its own images, most of which are links to embedded videos. This can be an effective means of grabbing the eye of somebody who is just doing a quick browse. Often, an image has caught my eye, I've stopped to check out the accompanying piece and an excellent use of embedded links to other stories has pulled me deeper into the site.
Even the subtle things, like the shadow effects on the stock market indicators, add to the overall polished look of the site. Since this is the online arm of NBC, this is to be expected. Unfortunately, not all major media sites look as good as one would expect, but more on that in a future post.
Room for improvement? Sure.
For one, the banner at the top of the home page:
This is actually a clever little design element. If the user mouses over, say "Health", the floating "speech bubble" displays the most current Health headlines. Therefore, theoretically a person can get a quick recap of all the current news with a simple movement of the mouse.
So, what's wrong with it?
Well, I've been coming to this site for a long time and I just noticed that it existed when I was grabbing screen shots for this entry.
The problem is that is looks too much like an advertising banner at first glance, which is all I was giving it. My clicking pattern was to open the site and immediately scroll down a couple of notches on my mouse wheel until the "ad" was buried at the top so I could see more content.
What could fix this? Something as simple as moving the "msnbc.com" logo to the top of the page above the bubble. Users are trained to expect that the content of a site begins at that logo and anything above it is something else, typically an ad.
Overall, MSNBC.com is very well designed but it still has a couple of places where it could be improved.
